books in red color are a necessity to survive and pass.
books in normal font are extras...
and books in italic are for the curious ones... they are not the basic textbooks... use them only for reference.

Books in blue is what we think you should read..

General Anatomy

• BD Churasia’s Human Anatomy (though the college faculty will oppose this book, they themselves ask a lot of things given in it… so it is a must read)

• RJ Lasts Anatomy (an excellent and brief book, good concepts, but not so useful for written exam as material is short)

• Snell’s Clinical Anatomy (an easy approach to anatomy, simple language. Again our system of exams doesn’t support this book)

• Gray’s Anatomy (for reference only… u can’t manage to read all topics from it. Use it for reference)

• Netter's Atlas of Anatomy (buy any one atlas u like)

• Sobotta’s atlas of anatomy (Available on CD too, actual book is too costly)

• Snell’s Neuroanatomy (required for brain region)

• Cunningham’s manual of anatomy

• Janquera & Carnero’s Basic Histology (excellent book!)

• Best and Taylors Physiological basis of medical practice (good book, but for reference only)... remember they have not issued any new issue since almost 10 years from now...

• NMS Physiology

• Mushtaq’s Medical Physiology (outdated, complicated)

SHORTCUTS

* no shortcut in anatomy... regular study is needed.

* Firdaus Physiology: read if u like to, but ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE READ THE SAME TOPIC FROM GUYTON EARLIER

* Biochemistry: notes from students are available at Union Bookstore etc..

NOTE: We do not recommend the shortcut books, nor will any professor do so... they may ruin your concepts... but many people do so... and they pass... and then many people fail too... so, its a risky one... and its your own choice... WE NEVER RECOMMEND THEM... We've mentioned them for sake of completion of the list!

PHARMACOLOGY

• Basic and Clinical Pharmacology... Katzung... too lengthy and quite complicated... some people may like it... but i never used it as my basic textbook...

• The Katzung & Trevor's Basic Pharmacology (review) is a lot better than the main text... quite brief and to the point...

• Pharmacology by Rang & Dale... No doubt the best book I've seen on pharmacology... would recommend it to everyone... a bit expensive as local eds are not available, but its worth reading... many people don't know about it... but its the book that makes pharma interesting and understandable in a friendly manner...

• Shamim: ugh... not a good book... but read it for the classifications... you'll never find such a detailed classification anywhere else.

• Cheema: not a good book... outdated and complicated.

• Goodman & Gilman... Any med student in his senses will not purchase it... its a reference book and u can have it from the library for some selected topics... or get its CD (its the full version of the book in 1 cd)

Pathology

• Robbin's Basic Pathology... simply the best... (medium one)

• Pathological basis of disease (Robbins - the big one) great... but difficult to revise at the end.

• Underwood's Pathology: again a great book just like the Rang & Dale of pharma... excellent illustrations and friendly language...

• for gen pathology alone: Walter & Israel is also a good one, but again too lengthy to revise...

• Shahzad/Jawad: better avoid them...

Microbiology

• Jawetz Review of Microbiology is the most commonly used book... and its fine... no need to go for anything else... it has parasitology too... Don't go for the main text (the big Jawetz)...

• MRS Microbiology... a good book... explains microbiology in a humorous manner...

there are many more but these two are more than enough...

Ophthalmology

* ABC of Ophthalmology... brief but not much useful for our exam system.

* Vaughan-Ausbry's General Ophthalmology... too tough for a sub like eye...

* Jogi's Basic Opthalmology... the most commonly used book... and I can say its enough for an under grad level.

* Red book... good one... but there are some errors... just like the usual pakistani texts...

Otorhinolaryngiology (ENT)

• Dhingra... the most commonly used one... and is enough if you have read it thoroughly.

• Mini Masood... a short book of 120 pages.. covers the entire ent... but u cant use it as ur basic text...

• The actual Masood's ent (big one) is tough at the under grad level..

• Park's textbook of Preventive & Social Medicine

• Nauman Hashmi's Community Medicine

* Kumar & Clark's Clinical Medicine... good one... but its a bit on the lengthier side...

* Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine... it seems long... but when u start reading it, u can end it...

* Harisson's Principles of Internal Medicine

* Cecil's (full version)... again a reference book

* Cecil's (the medium one) excellent... but still lengthy...

* Inam Danish... well I heard that it is a good one... but it is almost equal in terms of size to Davidson... so why do u want to paste a bad label on urself... go for davidson...

CMDT... many ppl read it... but i didnt use it much... u can use it if u like to...

* ABC of derma

* a brief course of derma by Tahir Saeed Haroon

* u can also read the chapter on derma in davidson or kumar & clarke

* Bailey & Loves Short Practice of Surgery... dont be afraid of its size... the pages are thick... (not exactly though!)

* Manipal Manual of Surgery ..Excellent..really...

* Henry & Thompson's Clinical Surgery... another good one... but most people use bailey & love.

* Elles Lecture notes... give them a read...

* Shamim: though i read it, but its not a good book... i can't recommend it...

* For operative procedures: javed iqbal is the best...

* for instruments: use our CDs & DVDs!

* Sabistan (REFERENCE BOOK)
Aneeqa's General Surgery: its a complete book on gen surgery covering all topics... but it has many unbelievable errors too... some are so basic & critical that they make me think if it was written by a doc...

For orthopeds: u can read the chapters in bailey & love, or shamim... or go for principles of fractures & dislocations by tahir hussain...

* MacLeod is also nice one..

*Chamberlain is also nice..( decide any one from Hutchi, Mcleod , chamberlain)

* Barbara Bates is excellent... but a bit lengthy..( we at MZ recommand it..)For clinical examination Bates is excellent - amongst the best when it comes to illustrations. If it's as good as the book, it will be worth to hae and read..

* Different CDs are also available for methods in the market...

*Bedside Clinics in Medicine bu Dr. Arup Kundu is really nice to crash all the viva Q-A in your clinical viva..also it helps to clear basics..It teaches you HOW TO THINK MEDICINE..

Surgery:

* Norman Browse is the standard book for undergrads...

* Hamilton Bailey... good one... ( we at MZ recommand it..worth to read )

* Bedside clinics in Surgery by Makhanlal saha is again really nice to crash all the viva Q-A in your clinical viva..also it helps to clear basics..It teaches you HOW TO THINK SURGERY..
